Gild Insurance Website

Gild

Startup insurtech company is shaking up the oft-staid world of business insurance

RESULTS:

Gild approached NewFoundry with a vision to rethink the business insurance industry’s approach to serving small and solo enterprise customers. Its founding team had identified a disconnect between what these customers need – individualized coverage, administered quickly and helpfully – and the prevailing manual, inefficient methodologies of traditional insurance quote and binding. They formed Gild to bridge this gap and in doing so, are on a mission to enable greater numbers of small business owners, freelancers, and solopreneurs to thrive while protecting their independence.

The backbone of Gild is Gildber, the friendly AI chatbot that serves as Gild’s mascot and conduit of communication between customers and Gild’s growing community of partner carriers. Gildber was designed and engineered by NewFoundry to leapfrog shoppers ahead in the quoting process by gathering a tiny bit of information and using it to access additional information from insurance databases. Gildber uses the information to triage needs and present the customer with recommendations, costs, and ultimately bind the chosen product(s).

Contrasted with the old way of doing things that involved lots of phone calls and trips to a brick & mortar agency, Gild is designed to meet this unique set of customers where they are, which is usually working with snatches of time between juggling customers, deliveries, and employees, and trying to squeeze in shopping for insurance from a handheld device.

In addition to working with Gild to design and engineer Gildber, NewFoundry’s role on the project included fleshing out the complete user experience; designing workflows for consumer education, quote, bind, payment, and account management; website design and engineering; cloud-based architecture and data security; and ongoing operations, maintenance, and security monitoring.

Gild is gaining significant traction in the marketplace and is turning heads with its fresh approach to solving problems and adding value. NewFoundry is proud of the feedback from Gild team leader Mary Hoeprich:

“Gild’s insurance agency partners are leaders in digital insurance technology. They’re incredibly impressed with the experience on our website, especially the use of tech to present accurate insurance knowledge. They’ve never seen anything like it. Thank you for the great partnership and congrats, NewFoundry team!”

With the first version of the site launched, NewFoundry continues its commitment to Gild’s success via our innovation team model. Gild’s dedicated design and development team within NewFoundry remains engaged, seamlessly implementing additional functionality, workflow improvements, engineering for carrier onboarding and integration, and more. The result is a crisp and clean yet approachable experience for Gilders and an open road to adding additional products, services, and innovations for Gild.

Michigan Medicine: Pain Pilot

A mobile application that is helping researchers combat the global opioid addiction crisis

RESULTS:

Effective pain management is critical to delivering excellence in care and the best possible surgical outcomes, and yet it is critical that pain medications are prescribed and taken responsibly. In pursuit of strategies to combat the global opioid addiction crisis, Michigan Medicine’s General Surgery team designed a research study to gain visibility into how people use over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription opioid pain medications. They approached NewFoundry to develop an application central to the study, enabling post-operative patients to report how they use these medications and the research team to understand the resulting effect on the pain curve. The result is Pain Pilot, a mobile app with a patient-friendly frontend experience developed within NewFoundry’s Kestrel Medical and a secure HIPAA-compliant backend system used by Michigan Medicine researchers to conduct the study.

The ideal scenario following surgical discharge is that a patient is able to manage pain exclusively with OTC medications and by taking the least amount necessary; if opioids must be used, it is minimally and they are discontinued as quickly as possible during the recovery journey. Pain Pilot is designed to encourage the ideal scenario while measuring actual usage and pain management outcomes.

Using the app, the care team specifies the patient’s medication protocol. Once at home, the patient consults the app for information about their pain medication options, the time that each may be safely taken, and how much may be safely taken. OTCs (e.g., ibuprofen, Tylenol) are prominently featured as “scheduled” options to encourage their use first, while opioids (e.g., oxycodone) are “as needed medications” to gently discourage their use. With a couple of taps, the patient indicates which medication and dose they are taking. The app prompts the patient to log a pain score (1-10) each time medication is taken or at other intervals established by the research team.

The app includes encouragement and education that helps patients continue to participate in the study and use pain medication responsibly. It monitors trends in the patient’s logged pain scores and prompts the patient to take action accordingly. For example, in response to a trend of high pain scores, the app suggests that the patient call the doctor (and offers to connect the call with a tap). On the other hand, a trend of low pain scores triggers the app to suggest that if the patient is feeling better they should continue OTCs as needed and safely dispose of remaining opioids. In addition, the patient can get information about each medication in the protocol (e.g., how to take, benefits, risks, side effects, warnings, what to do in event of overdose) within the app.

NewFoundry’s role in creating Pain Pilot included fleshing out the application needs and requirements via discovery with Michigan Medicine; writing user stories; designing workflows, wireframes, and mockups; and engineering the app end to end including mobile app development, cloud infrastructure, and HIPAA compliance (user validation and secure handling and anonymizing of private health information).

Based on early success with Pain Pilot, Michigan Medicine has expanded its long-term vision to include working with us to create an entire suite of apps (known as MedGuider) centered on excellence in care and the best possible outcomes for patients.

NuStep: T6

All-new intuitive UI design motivates exercisers while increasing trainer effectiveness and efficiency

RESULTS:

NuStep designs, develops and manufactures recumbent cross trainers that have become a mainstay in healthcare, wellness and fitness environments. When NuStep set about modernizing its core product, the T4/T5, it reached out to NewFoundry to help reimagine the user interface for both the upper main display and the additional lower display. The resulting product is the all-new cross trainer T6 series.

NewFoundry started by understanding the needs, tasks, desires, and fears of NuStep users by analyzing client-provided user research. We deepened that understanding with a NewFoundry-led UX discovery workshop in NuStep’s on-site gym. We interviewed NuStep experts in training, product development, and marketing to gain a visceral understanding of the unique needs of NuStep’s exerciser and trainer populations. In addition to gaining insight into the social, instructional, and motivational needs of the NuStep exerciser, we observed the tasks of busy trainers in a simulated clinical setting. Getting as many patients exercising at a personalized optimal level as quickly as possible and helping patients feel successful are core objectives of the trainer.

Based on this deep understanding of the two primary user groups, NewFoundry designed the HMI for the new T6. A main feature of the design is an all-new version of Pace Partner, a key motivational element that helps NuStep patients get the most from every minute on the machine and provides the essential KPIs that reinforce success and keep them coming back for their next workout session. Watch the short video to see it in action:

In all, NewFoundry designed every aspect of the T6 interface, including the upper home screen, Quick Start mode, Pace Partner, Charts, the lower main control screen, settings, workout summary, user profile, and over-the-air (OTA) software update workflow. Over the course of this work, we established a cohesive visual language for T6 that will be easy to extend to other NuStep products as models are updated or added to the lineup in the future.

NewFoundry also provided engineering expertise and support, working with NuStep’s in-house product development team to implement the UX/UI design and more.

Michigan Medicine: MAIN

Web and mobile application helps patients understand and recover from alcohol addiction

RESULTS:

University of Michigan physicians and researchers developed a decision-making and education model to help hepatology clinic patients who suffer from disease as a result of alcohol addiction. They formed a group, named MAIN (Michigan Alcohol Improvement Network), to further advance their mission and sought NewFoundry’s help to develop the MAIN application for mobile and web.

Based on user answers to a series of questions, the MAIN application helps patients understand the misconceptions they may have about alcohol use, safety, and addiction, then presents three best-fit treatment recommendations which take into account the patient’s personal preferences, lifestyle, and budgetary constraints. The application then helps the patient take the first step toward treatment by presenting the name, phone, and location of treatment centers nearest the patient’s zip code.

NewFoundry’s strategy, UX design, and engineering teams worked together to create workflows that support the needs of patients, researchers, and clinicians. Hepatology patients suffering from cirrhosis of the liver often experience cognitive impairment, so we designed the app’s patient interface with this in mind, adding illustrations and other design elements to improve comprehension and provide as frictionless an experience as possible. To support the needs of researchers, workflows were designed to ensure recording and database storage of user response data at strategic points in patient workflows. Clinicians are able to unlock select application features with a code, supporting their need to have more effective and fruitful conversations with their patients. Clinicians can easily provide patients with a personalized evaluation and treatment recommendation report at the end of their appointment, paving the way to the first step toward recovery and improved health.
